Want to enhance the colour and lock the sand solid? Choose a Polyurethane Block Paving Sealer.

→ SummitSeal - Ultimate Block Paving Sealer - Polyurethane

Want an invisible, eco-friendly finish with no odours? Choose a Solvent-Free Water-Based Sealer.

→ SummitSeal - Block Paving Sealer - Acrylic Solvent Based

Explanation:

If you have ever spent an entire weekend painstakingly pressure washing your block paving, you know how soul-destroying it is to watch the weeds grow back and the colours fade just a few months later.

Block paving is highly porous, and the sand between the joints is the perfect breeding ground for airborne weed seeds and burrowing insects. To protect your driveway, stop the weeds, and lock out oil stains, you must seal the blocks.

However, deciding to seal your driveway is only half the battle; you also have to choose the right chemistry. We offer SummitSeal Block Paving Sealer in two distinct formulas: a heavy-duty Polyurethane, and an eco-friendly Solvent-Free (Water-Based) option. Here is our straightforward guide to the pros and cons of each.

1. SummitSeal Polyurethane: The Heavy-Duty Enhancer

Solvent-based polyurethane is the traditional, commercial-grade standard for block paving. It is engineered for maximum physical strength and dramatic visual transformation.

The Pros:

  • The "Wet Look" Colour Enhancer: Unsealed block paving looks fantastic while it is raining, but dries to a dull, faded, chalky colour. Polyurethane penetrates deep into the porous concrete, permanently locking in that vibrant, rich "wet look" and bringing old, tired blocks back to life.

  • Ultimate Sand Stabilization: This is the biggest functional advantage of polyurethane. As the liquid sealer soaks into the kiln-dried sand between your blocks, it cures into a solid, rubbery resin. This locks the blocks firmly in place, stops the sand from washing away in heavy rain, and creates a massive, solid barrier against weed roots and ant nests.

  • Extreme Stain Resistance: It creates a highly durable, water-repellent barrier that stops engine oil, brake fluid, and muddy footprints from soaking into the concrete.

The Cons (The Honest Trade-Offs):

  • Strong Odours: Because it is solvent-based, it has a strong chemical smell during application and the initial curing phase.

  • Tougher Cleanup: You cannot wash your tools with water. You will need white spirit or specialized thinners to clean your rollers and sprayers.

  • The Paint Clash Rule: Polyurethane creates a slick, solvent-based barrier. If you ever decide you want to paint your blocks with a standard outdoor water-based acrylic patio paint in the future, it will fail to bond.

2. SummitSeal Solvent-Free: The Eco-Friendly Invisible Shield

If you want to protect your driveway but hate the idea of strong chemical smells or a glossy finish, our Solvent-Free (Water-Based) sealer is the perfect modern alternative.

The Pros:

  • The "Invisible" Natural Finish: Unlike polyurethane, our water-based sealer does not dramatically darken the stone or leave a glossy sheen. Once dry, it is practically invisible. It protects the blocks from rain and oil while maintaining the raw, natural, matte appearance of the paving.

  • Zero Odour & Eco-Friendly: Because there are no harsh solvents, there are no toxic fumes. It is completely safe to use around garden plants, pets, and fish ponds, making it a stress-free application experience.

  • Easy Cleanup: If you spill it on a nearby wall, or when it comes time to clean your tools, you simply wash them out with warm, soapy water.

The Cons:

  • Less Sand Binding: While it does offer excellent protection for the concrete blocks themselves, a water-based sealer will not set the joint sand quite as rock-hard as a solvent-based polyurethane will. It stabilizes the sand, but it does not turn it into a solid resin block.

  • No Colour Restoration: If your blocks are heavily faded and you want to restore their original deep red or charcoal colour, the water-based sealer will not achieve this. It preserves the current look rather than enhancing it.

Conclusion

Choosing the right block paving sealer comes down to the visual finish you prefer and the level of weed protection you require.

By matching the right SummitSeal chemistry to your driveway, you can block the stains, preserve the stone, and drastically reduce the amount of time you spend pressure-washing every spring.
